Edmonton Police Services in partnership with University of Alberta have launched a mental health training program to better equip their officers to deal with people who are struggling with mental illness.
The training works. After officers took a one day mental health training, studies showed decreases in police use of physical force and use of force by weapons, and increases in mental health awareness and self-reported officer confidence when dealing with mental health calls.
